Self Awareness & Basic Self-Defence
Over the past years, the need has become very apparent for people to be
very aware of their surroundings. The amount of personal attacks such as
robberies, assaults, purse snatches, shootings and even stabbings has
been rising at a very steady rate. Notwithstanding the emotional, or
physical concerns that one may endeavor to overcome one of these types
of horrible crimes, but as well there are legal issues and liabilities
that must be adhered to when defending ones self. Although nothing is
100%, there are ways to greatly reduce the possibility of becoming a “victim”.
The courses offered by Firstline of Defence
arms each participant with the knowledge and ability to recognize some
of the signs or threats and to protect them selves from harm. The course covers
the basics of self-defence as well as common sense approach to self
awareness. It also covers sections of the Criminal Code of Canada with
particular emphasis on the ‘use of force’ when trying to defend one’s
self and the pertinent sections for apprehending a suspect should you
happen to intervene in a situation.
The basic Self Defence portion is a physical component which
demonstrates the ways to escape from a grab, choke, bear hug, grabbing
of hair and/or anything the class may/wishes to see. Each participant
will have a technique demonstrated to them, and then it will be
practiced with a class partner under the supervision of the instructors.
The most important factor in practicing these skills is safety.
These courses can be tailored to meet specific needs for time (days,
evenings & weekends) or location (ours or yours). Contact

WORKPLACE
HARASSMENT / VIOLENCE
PREVENTION SEMINARS The central goal of this 2-3 hour seminar is to better equip your
staff to recognize and address aggressive, potentially dangerous
behavior in the workplace. Essentially, this safety seminar that is
broken down into two
segments: prevention and intervention:
Prevention
- The prevention segment focuses on safety planning, office
design as well as recognizing and de-fusing a potentially dangerous
situation. Employees have an opportunity to experience our reality based
training style in role-play scenarios of dangerous situations in a safe
environment. They are coached on how to interact and position themselves
with a hostile individual.
Intervention - The second part of this seminar is centered on
intervention and escape. It provides employees with simple yet effective
physical techniques to allow them to escape from violent encounters
(i.e., what to do if the aggressor grabs your wrist, your neck, your
shirt). The seminar also provides realistic defence for more violent
confrontations (i.e., what to do if he knocks you to the ground and
begins to choke you or kick at you).
Participants in this program are introduced to a series of role-play
scenarios involving aggressive individuals. They are coached on how to
use de-escalation strategies to help reduce the risk of a violent
episode. Participants also learn about the range of safeguards that can
be implemented at the workplace and how to use them in a potential
crisis situation. Personal safety techniques are also introduced so that
participants are able to defend against and escape from basic physical
attacks. This seminar is an ideal prevention tool for any organization
that deals with the public.
Most of our corporate participants report that they have found these
personal safety skills useful in their personal as well as professional
life. Since 2000, Firstline of Defence has trained many. We look forward
to the opportunity to work with your organization in the future.
